.Liam nodded.“It suits me.I feel good with them.Better.”“It’s showing,” Samson replied with a soft smile. With his daughter just in the other room and Travis not too far away, Liam felt content and safe in a way he hadn’t experienced before meeting them. They were his family and reminded him every day that he was lucky to have them both in his life.* * * *That night as Travis tucked Hannah into bed, he was surprised when she grabbed one of her new books off her nightstand and handed it to him.“Read to me,” she demanded as she settled underneath the covers. He smiled at her and got on the bed, lying down next to her.Although the dogs gave him dirty looks when he pushed them out of the way, they soon found places at the foot of the bed to stretch out on.“Will do.But just one story, alright?” She pouted but eventually caved with a slow nod.“And then will you tell me how your first day was? You’ve barely spoken about it this whole evening.”Hannah giggled and some of his worry was alleviated.“When Daddy Liam comes back.”“Alright.Deal,” Travis replied, opening up the book and turning to the first page.Liam had only been gone for ten minutes, he’d take at least another twenty to finish checking around the edges of their yard for anything dangerous. In all the time they’d been together, Liam had never specified what exactly he was looking for, but Travis felt better knowing he’d looked anyway. They weren’t more than halfway through the book when Liam stepped into the room, his shifter shorts hanging around his hips as he hopped onto the bed on the other side of Hannah.“What are we reading?” he asked, looking over Travis’ shoulder.Travis shrugged, the book no longer interesting as he caught sight of Liam post-run.A light sheen of sweat sparkled over his chest and arms and his too-bright eyes glowed in Hannah’s dimly lit bedroom.“How was the run?” he quietly asked his husband.Liam smiled at him.“Good.I saw a fox.”“No more book!” Hannah declared.Travis instantly put it away, ready to hear about his daughter’s very first day of pre-kindergarten instead.“Okay, it’s gone,” he said as pushed it further away.Liam nodded.“Now tell us all about class.Your teacher, your friends, what did you learn?”She took a deep breath.“I made a friend. He’s nice.”Travis met Liam’s gaze over her head.“You made friends with a boy?” Travis asked her.Hannah smiled and played with the ruffled hem of her comforter.“Yes.He’s got floppy ears like my doggies. But he’s too little for class.I like him though. He’s funny”Liam brushed some of her hair away from her forehead.“Hannah, sweetie, if he’s too young to go to class, then how did you meet him?”“He’s Miss Maisey’s son,” Hannah replied instantly.Travis nodded, knowing that was her teacher’s first name, but Liam looked confused.“What’s wrong?” Travis asked him.Liam pursed his lips.“Maisey and her husband do have a son.But he’s two and was non-verbal the last time I talked to her about him.Which was last month.Hannah, how did you talk to Phillip?”She giggled and shook her head.“Not that. His name is Ippy. And we talk in my head.I tried to get him to talk to me with noises, but he said no.He likes playing games. That’s why he’s funny.”Travis felt just as confused as Liam looked.“Oookay.So this Ippy and you can talk in your minds?”She nodded eagerly.“He’s my special friend. My best friend.Like you and Daddy Liam.”Liam closed his eyes tightly and Travis tucked the blanket around her shoulders.“Hannah, I think it’s great that you made a friend.Really I do.Friends are important,” Travis told her, completely at a loss as to what to do about his daughter being able to use mind speak with a shifter.“Think he’ll be there again tomorrow?” Hannah asked them, looking excited as she sat up and turned to fluff her pillow.Travis and Liam got off her bed and Travis leaned down to kiss her forehead.“I’m not sure, baby.Maybe.Would you like that?”Hannah yawned loudly.“Yes.I would.”Liam stepped forward, placing a kiss on her cheek before motioning their dogs to come up around her again
